A former detective with the Eureka Police Department who spent 26 years with the department is now the chief of police with the Yurok Tribal Police Department.

According to officer David Miller, Dave Parris has been the department since Dec. 1 and is transitioning into the chief position.

Parris retired from the Eureka Police Department in last month.

He spent five years as a patrol officer for the department before he was promoted to major crimes detective in 1985.

In 1992 he was promoted again to senior detective and in 2001 he was promoted to supervisor of the Criminal Investigations Division.

Detective Neal Hubbard now heads the Criminal Investigation Division for the Eureka Police Department.
