The Eureka Police Department classroom was packed Friday with people telling 50 years worth of stories about Capt. Murl Harpham.Harpham started with the department on June 15,1957. Current and former law enforcement personnel, including Harpham's former partners, and members of the public came from around the area to tell tales — and say some nice words — about Harpham. Even those who didn't work with him directly, say that Harpham — known for his straight-talking, no-nonsense ways — made his mark with them, "It takes a real special person to be in law enforcement as long as he has and not become jaded and cynical," said Arcata Police Capt. Tom Chapman., Most of the tales involved Harpham's well-known sense of humor.
